In today’s day and age one would never think about not having plastic around. Some older people remember when there wasn’t any plastic; others grew up with it all around them. Plastic is man made, and in eighteen sixty two Alexander Parkes showed the world his invention. The general public called it Parkesine. Then it was an organic material made from cellulose. Once it was heated up, it could be molded into any shape you wanted. He touted that this plastic could go anything that rubber could but at a much lower cost. But it would soon lose its luster and investors started pulling out of the product because it was getting more and more expensive to make.

Wanting to find another way of making billiard balls, instead of killing thousands of elephants to make them, something else had to be found. Then comes along John Wesley Hyatt, an American with the answer. He spilled a bottle of collodion (a combination of ether, alcohol and pyroxylin) in his workshop. He looked at it and it was forming a hard but flexible film. He formed it into billiard balls but they shattered every time they were hit. So he added camphor a derivative of the laurel tree. This made the balls hard and they would not crack or break upon being hit.
